使用數字英文時，必須事先瞭解中英文在表達上的差一點，再透過不斷地練習，直到能夠直覺反應，將中文數字快速地轉換成英文，以求有效、正確地與人溝通。
前些日子在電視「百萬小學堂」的電視節目中，有一則英文考題：「Add 12 to the product of 5 and 6，等於」很多人因為不知道「product」在數學用語裡是「乘積」的意思，所以出於直覺會把問題翻譯成『「在5和6的成績＋12」等於多少？』，答案就是42。
這讓我想起以前剛進外商時，每次討論業績目標或預算時，自己總是慢半拍，原因就在於老外的數字用法和我們不同。英文的數字用法是以千為單位，往上加3個零，例如 Thousand (1,000 ;千)、Million (1,000,000；100萬)、Billion (1,000,000,000 ；10億)、Trillion (1,000,000,000,000 ；1兆)，以此類推。然而，中文卻是以4個零為基準，例如萬（10,000）、億(100,000,000)等，所以當我們想講「一萬」，腦中會直譯成「one xxx」，而不是「10 thousand」。
此外，老美習慣以「美元」為計算基礎，所以在溝通數字前，必須先將台幣換算成美元，他們才比較能感覺這個數字的大小。而在看報表時，也要注意「基本單位」是什麼，如果數字太大，一般都會以千、百萬或十億為單位，讓報表上的數字不會太冗長。
還要補充的一點是，有些聽起來較容易混淆的數字，也要格外留心，例如13與30、14與40、15與50、16與60、17與70、19與90。當你想說這個月的業績做到「forty milliion」，對方可能會聽成「fourteen million」，此時可以在補充強調「forty, four zero」。
不過，數字的英文念法並非千篇一律，就好比「零」可以念成「zero」，也可以讀成英文字母的「O」，可依照使用時機加以變通，例如用在金錢、電話號碼或小數等，念法就不盡相同。下面是不同情況下，各種數字的英文念法。

•4/3：four-thirds
•159/234：one hundred and fifty-nine over two hundred and thirty-four
小數：小數點後面的數字，一律一個一個念。
•1.5：one point five
•0.23：zero point two three
•3,485.3451：three thousand four hundred and eighty-five point three-four-five-one
•0.5%：(zero) point five percent (zero可省略)
•95.99%：ninety-five point nine nine percent
•50 bps（基本點）：fivety basis points (就等於0.5%)
電話號碼：
註１：習慣上會一個字一個字的念，以求清楚，但有時為了方便起見，最後4個數字可以兩個一起念。
註２：在國外有時候會看到電話號碼中夾雜英文字，例如 1-800-PIN-DROP，這是因為電話鍵盤上的每個數字按鍵都會有對應的英文字母，例如2對應到ABC，3對應到DEF，所以上述電話號碼就可以轉成 1-800-746-3767，以利記憶。這有點像台灣商家喜歡用電話的諧音（2882-5252：餓爸爸餓-我餓我餓）。
